Sober Curious Coastal is thrilled to be funded by the Coastal Lives Foundation, an initiative run by SUMMIT.
About the Coastal Lives Foundation
Managing a long-term health condition can affect every part of someone’s daily life. However, in coastal communities, these difficulties are often made worse by a mix of social, economic, and environmental challenges.
Rates of smoking, alcohol and substance misuse, and obesity are significantly higher, while coastal towns also tend to have a larger proportion of elderly residents. Housing presents additional pressures, with a high reliance on private rented accommodation, houses of multiple occupation (HMOs), and static caravan parks. Employment opportunities are also more limited, with unemployment and part-time work more common, and employer growth nearly twice as low as in non-coastal areas.
As a result, many of the coastal communities in Essex fall within the most deprived 10% of wards in England, according to both the Indices of Deprivation and the Community Needs Index.
The Coastal Lives Foundation exists to improve the lives of people in Tendring with long-term conditions who may be reluctant to engage with statutory services. By working in partnership with local charities and community organisations, SUMMIT funds grassroots initiatives that are best placed to deliver targeted, practical support and services to those who need them most.
