Tips for an Alcohol Free Easter

Easter can be a surprisingly tricky time to stay Sober. Long weekends, extra days off work, social gatherings, and the “it’s a celebration” mindset can all bring pressure to drink. But it’s also an opportunity to do things differently, create new traditions.

Remember the ‘first’ of any occasion sober can feel a little tricky. It does get easier, I promise! This will be my 8th sober Easter and I’m super excited for the delicious food, extra time with family! I am so grateful I don’t lose half the weekend feeling hungover these days! Yuk!

Follow my steps below and be kind to yourself, you can do this!

Here are some gentle, practical tips to help you stay sober (and enjoy it) this Easter:

  1. Make a plan.
Think ahead about where you’ll be, who you’ll see, and how you want to feel. Decide in advance what you’ll drink instead, how you’ll respond if offered alcohol, and when you might need to leave. Have a clear visualisation in your mind of getting through the period sober and how great you will feel knowing you’ve achieved this!
  2. Have at home/take with you, some lovely alcohol-free options
Whether it’s a sparkling elderflower, alcohol-free wine, or a fancy soft drink, having something you enjoy in your hand makes a huge difference. It helps you feel included and removes the “what can I have?” awkwardness. Pick something that really feels like a treat. One of my favourites is a fancy tonic in a lovely glass, simple but feels grown up, or an AF rum and coke feels really special as I don’t have it often.
  3. Have a go-to response ready
You don’t owe anyone a big explanation. Keep it simple and confident:
  • “I’m not drinking at the moment.”
  • “I feel better without it.”
  • “I’m taking a break from alcohol.”

Avoid statements that sound unsure, for example ‘I’m trying not to drink’, as these can encourage people to try to ‘talk you round’.

Share as much or as little as you feel comfortable about your reasons for not drinking. It is no one else’s business, so if you don’t want to give a reason, ‘no thank you’ is a complete sentence!

Most people will move on quickly—especially if you do.

  1. Focus on what you’re gaining, not missing. Better sleep. Clearer head. More meaningful conversations, being more present for loved ones. No hangovers! Remind yourself why you chose this path, especially if a wobbly moment appears. Enjoy some guilt free chocolate, thinking about all the empty calories you’re not consuming in alcohol!
  2. Create new Easter traditions
Shift the focus away from alcohol. Think walks by the sea, family games, cooking something special, or a relaxed brunch. New rituals can make the weekend feel fresh rather than restrictive.
  3. Be aware of triggers - HALTT
Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired, Thirsty - we don’t make our best choices when we are any of these things!  Keep snacks handy, drink plenty of water, rest when you need to, and check in with yourself regularly.
  4. Have an exit strategy
If something doesn’t feel good, you’re allowed to leave. Protecting your peace is more important than staying to please others.
  5. Stay connected to your “why”
Whether it’s your health, your family, your mental wellbeing, or simply curiosity—your reason matters. Come back to it often. Check in with a sobriety Facebook group, or a supportive friend, community can be super helpful if you’ve having a wobble.   If you find yourself craving a drink, ( first check through HALTT) and then play it forward. How will you feel tomorrow?  Is that really what you want?
  1. Sweet Cravings –If you’re one of the many people who develop a bit of a sweet tooth when you go alcohol free.  First of all, don’t panic, it is totally normal and subsides over time!  As I mentioned earlier, my advice is to enjoy some guilt free chocolate, feeling proud of all the empty calories you’re now not consuming in alcohol!  However IF you are looking to reduce your sugar intake though, I found that a little sniff of vanilla essential oil worked wonders and fending off the sweet cravings.

Last but not least - in a world seemingly obsessed with alcohol,

choosing to go Alcohol Free is a badass move and I’m so proud of you!

Happy, sober Easter 💛
